AYURVEDA
is
the traditional health science of India. The word "Ayur"
means
Life
and "Veda"
means
science
or knowledge.
It briefly explains the knowledge of the do's and don'ts one has
to follow in order to be physically and mentally healthy.

History
|
|
The
Indian philosophy is based on the four Vedas or treatises - the
Rigveda,
the Yajurveda,
the Samveda and
the Adharva Veda,
which have been followed for over 5000 years now. Ayurveda emerged
as the branch of Adharva veda and is said to have originated from
Lord Brahma (who, as per Indian Philosophy, is the creator of
universe), and descended to the earth through various generations
of Gods and Saints and handed down by means of ancient venerable
scripts. The oldest works in Ayurveda now available are the Charaka
Samitha, Susrutha Samitha and Ashtanga Samgraha.

Health
in Ayurveda
|
|
The
objective of Ayurveda is to establish prime health in every living
being, physically, mentally and spiritually. Health according
to Ayurveda can be defined as a state of equilibrium of the action
of Doshas, Dhatus, Malas and Agni accompanied by tranquility of
body and sense organs, mind and soul. This equilibrium is maintained
through a life in conformity with the laws of nature. Wrong behavior
and food habits disturb the harmony and lead to diseases. The
basic principle of treatment in Ayurveda is to eliminate the internal
disease causing factors of disease, and to bring back the vitiated
Doshas (organs which control and maintain the body), Dhatus (organs
supporting the body functions), Malas ( things which contaminate
the body) and Agni ( representative of solar energy in the body)
to the normal functioning state.

|
|
There
are three main diagnostic procedures :
- Darsana
Pareeksha (observing physical symptoms)
- Prasna
Pareeksha (asking questions about the organs which have problem)
- Sparsana
Pareeksha (by touching the patient such as checking pulse,
percussion etc)
|
| |
|
Treatment
|
|
Treatment
is broadly classified into two :
- Sodhana
Chikilsa (or purification therapy)
- Shamana
Chikilsa (or Alleviating therapy)
