MALDIVES
ISLAND TOUR
|

Maldives
- the coral archipelago of 26 atolls and
1190 islands are located south west of India, approximately one
hour by flight from Trivandrum, South India or Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The inhabited islands number only 199, and the population 300,000.
The word atoll is adapted into English from Dhivehi, the language
of the Maldives, with roots to Sanskrit and Pali. English is widely
spoken. The climate of Maldives is warm year round, determined
by the monsoons. The Northwest Monsoon (November - April) is drier,
while the Southwest Monsoon (May - October) brings more rain.
However, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in some neighboring
countries.

These
islands stretch like a garland of emeralds on a sparkling blue
sea and dazzle with white beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm
waters and coral reefs teeming with marine life, continue to fascinate
visitors as it has fascinated others in the past for thousands
of years.

Brilliant
white sands, azure blue seas, tropical palms, sun and surf, the
Maldives is an ideal destination to lie back, sip a drink and
tan a delightful bronze.
Pamper
yourself or rather let others pamper you as you sit back and relax
in one of the luxurious resorts. If a holiday spells action for
you, test the surf on your surfboard or dive in the waters to
admire the exotic marine life or just simply hold her hand and
walk on the soft white sand as the sun sets over the blue sea.

Drift
over the channels, linger over the pinnacles or the drop-offs.
Or the valleys of soft corals and gardens of the hard corals clouded
with fish, nearly always tame. Tropicals to pelagics. Snappers,
morays, mantas, turtles, sharks, and whale sharks. Perhaps nowhere
else in the world is the marine life as rich, diverse or colorful
as in these warm waters of the Indian Ocean stretching 470 miles
across the equator, a garland-like atoll chain dotted with countless
reefs and 1190 islands, nearly a thousand of them uninhabited.
Encounters with 10,000 to 100,000 schooling fish with 30 to 50
eagle or manta rays are not uncommon. This is one of the best
places in the world for fish photography.

Dive
season starts in July when the rich plankton blooms attract the
big animals: MANTAS and WHALE SHARKS. The best time for their
sightings is July through November, the visibility averaging 75
to 100 foot. For richer fish life, clearer waters if stronger
currents (100 foot plus visibility) and calmer seas, the period
is December to April when the resorts and live-aboards trading
on the European winter tend to be heavily booked, sometimes months
in advance.
