antiques since the Ashoka period to the 12th century. Realizing
the sanctity of the site, emperor Ashoka, in the 3rd century B.C.
built some of the finest monuments and legacies. The 34-meter-high
'Dhamek' stupa stands as a remarkable structure. This contains
the remains of Lord Buddha, while the Deer Park in Sarnath is
where the Lord delivered his first sermon. The area is now graceful
and pleasant, breathing the spirit of the enlightened one, aglow
with the devotion of the many followers who inhabited it through
the centuries that followed. Other attractions here are "
Choukhandi Stupa" which was built in 1555 A.D by Mughal Emperor
Akbar and is believed to be the place where Buddha met his five
disciples. The "Mulgandha Kuti Vihara" - the Tibetian

The
Khajuraho temples were built between 950-1050 AD. A wall with
eight gates, each flanked by two golden palm trees enclosed the
whole area. There were originally over 80 temples, of which only
22 now stand in a reasonable state of preservation. The set of
temples at Khajuraho celebrating Hindu religious thought in its
bewildering variety of scope and inclusion stands distinguished
from rest of the Hindu temples. The temples highlight the existential
ethos in religion that venerates 'Yoga' and 'Bhoga'. 'Yoga' is
union of the self with the Almighty, while 'Bhoga' is the path
to God through physical pleasure. The temples at Khajuraho, dedicated
to physical love and pleasure are a testimony to this philosophy.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 in order to preserve its
splendor for posterity, Khajuraho is a prominent, must-see destination
on most tourist itineraries. Rediscovered only in this century,
restored and cleaned, the temples of Khajuraho once again testify
to a past glory.
The
temples at Khajuraho are divided into three broad groups:
1.
The Western Group, which is the largest, compact and centrally
located group in Khajuraho, includes some of the most prominent
monuments.
2. The Eastern Group, which comprises of five detached subgroups
in and around the present village of Khajuraho.
3. The Southern Group, which is the most distant one comprising
of two main monuments near and across the Khudarnala.

Temple, the Matangesvara Temple and the Varaha Temple form one
complex and the Visvanatha and Nandi temples are not far from
this complex.
The
Archaeological Survey of India maintains the western group of
monuments. The monuments of the group face east and are arranged
in two rough alignments, running north south.
